Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone maker has reportedly announced that it is working on a smartphone that will feature a 108MP camera using Samsung‘s latest 108-megapixel ISOCEL sensor. Earlier in May, Samsung announced its line of massive 64-megapixel ISOCELL camera sensors for smartphones.
This week in Beijing, Xiaomi, via XDA-Developers, held a camera technology event, Xiaomi Future Image Technology Communication Conference. There, the company showed off details about the Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 camera sensor set to bring 64 MP cameras to an upcoming Redmi phone. At a public briefing itself, the company also announced that it will become the first manufacturer to use Samsung’s brand new 108-megapixel ISOCEL sensor.” The highest resolution of an image from this sensor would be staggering 12,032 x 9,024 pixels.
Apart from this, no other details about the smartphone or the camera have been revealed by Xiaomi. What has been detailed, however, is the 64MP camera that is all set to arrive under companies Redmi brand.
According to a press release issued by the company, this makes “Xiaomi the first smartphone company to exhibit the 64MP imaging technology.”
Knowing that Redmi is typically Xiaomi’s more affordable sub-brand, it should be interesting to see how Xiaomi decides to price the 64 MP-packing phones when it launches. To that end, the company confirmed that the device will launch in India later in 2019.
To be able to take such large 64 MP or even 108 MP photos, your device needs to be able to process all those extra pixels without dragging your whole phone down. To that end, Qualcomm has already said that its chips are ready for camera sensors capable of over 100 MP to potentially launch this year.
Xiaomi released its first smartphone in August 2011 and rapidly gained market share in China to become the country’s largest smartphone company in 2014. By early 2018, Xiaomi was the world’s fourth-largest smartphone manufacturer, leading in both the largest market, China, and the second-largest market, India. Xiaomi later developed a wider range of consumer electronics, including a smart home (IoT) device ecosystem.
