Reliance Jio is one of the best companies when it comes to telecommunication business in India. It has managed to win over the Indian people with very simple yet effective strategies. Jio always had a plan to gradually increase its prices from bare minimum. The Indian company’s bare minimum was zero and no other company could compete with a free service. This led to a huge subscriber base since the very start.
Even now, the prices that a Jio user has to play are not extravagant. They are pretty much affordable and companies like Vodafone, Idea, and Airtel are struggling to cope up with it. Jio is also coming up with its Wi-Fi service for the public and it is being tested in states such as Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and a few more. Jio users get additional services like JioTV, JioSaavn app for music, free subscription to Hotstar and many such features. Other telecom companies fight really hard but fail to match such features that are offered by Jio.
Apart from this Jio has forayed into phone making business. It already has a market share in ultra-less priced phones. In 2018, Jio is making feature phones and mostly for the rural market and also for tier-3 cities. The phones range from INR 1000 to 3000. At this price, they offer WhatsApp, YouTube, Facebook and television services to the users. These feature phones use Kai OS which is not that new in the tech world but new for the users.
That said, Jio is now planning to make smartphones with better connectivity. Sunil Dutt, head of sales channel development at Reliance Jio said while talking to Economic Times that the company is going to bring in large-screen smartphones at affordable prices. This is to address a large community which is yet to switch to 4G and are finding it hard to spend a lot of money on 4G devices. The company is working with major smartphone makers to bring in large screen phones with better connectivity and better content with an attractive and affordable price tag.
Dutt also promised that the company will keep surprising their users with something new every other month. He also talked about addressing gaps in the market which companies are reluctant to exploit. That can be because the companies are not willing to take the necessary risks to address that particular gaps or they have different plans for the future but Reliance Jio has the resources and the idea to do it. That said, Jio is working with the likes of Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo and even Samsung to bring down the costs of smartphones. They have also partnered with Flex which is going to locally manufacture 100 million smartphones in the upcoming year.
There are more than 500 million people in India who use feature phones even now and Jio has the right mindset and plans to address those people. The plan was to first let them experience good content with good connectivity by launching the JioPhone and then dazzle them with smartphones at a bit of a hike so that they will feel the need to switch to a better phone. The company is halfway there and it will only be a successful ride for the Reliance group.
