Get over Alexa, Google Assitant and Get a Sony SRS-XB402M Smart Speaker

The Japanese electronics company, Sony, announced its smart speaker SRS-XB402M that will come with an in-built voice assistant, Alexa. Smart Speakers are in vogue nowadays, and Google and Amazon have been dominating the segment almost since inception. However, though late, Sony has finally arrived at the party.
The newly launched speaker is now available for pre-booking at the launch offer price of Rs 19,990 till 18 August all across Sony brand shops, major electronic stores, and e-commerce portals like Flipkart and Amazon. The buyers who will pre-book these speakers will also get Sony headphones (MDR-XB450AP ) worth Rs 2,490 for free. It will be available for purchase from 13 August. After the 18th, the speaker will be available for Rs 24,990.
In terms of aesthetics, Sony SRS-XB402M has a stylish fabric finish design, which sports inbuilt multi-coloured lights that sync with the running music. The top is rubberised and holds all the buttons you will need to switch on, adjust volume and skips songs.
If it’s a speaker, of course it needs to score good at acoustics. The audio quality of the SRS-XB402M is pretty good and, it throws music all around the room. The hardware packed inside the Sony SRS-XB402M is what makes all the difference in the world. There are two audio drivers, each 53mm in size, placed at an angle to disperse sound over a wider area around the sides too, and not just at the front. Sony says this is the lightweight Mica Reinforced Cellular (MRC) speaker cone, which is also more rigid and thereby reduces unnecessary vibrations that can be the reason for distortions.
There is a Live mode if you like a more spatial feel. Sound is a bit partial to bass as you would expect from Sony. But you can use the settings in the app to switch to the clear audio mode.
SRS-XB402M is convincingly capable of adapting to all types of music and a variety of genres. The audio quality improves and becomes more full-bodied as you increase the volume.
Setting this up is quite simple, and very similar to how we have set up multiple Alexa speakers. You need to download the Sony Music Center app (free for Android and iOS) to get the SRS-XB402M ready for action. It connects with your home Wi-Fi, at least to get the Alexa assistant working. The more traditional, Bluetooth connectivity is also available.
It is IP67 rated which makes it waterproof, dustproof, rustproof and shockproof. Its battery can last up to 12 hours according to Sony. While most of the Alexa capable speakers don’t even have a battery, this is a genuine value addition to be able to carry this around the home and beyond.
At Rs 19,990, the Sony SRS-XB402M is a very impressive smart speaker. At the moment it is cheaper than what Bose (priced around Rs 39,000 ) has to offer and offers a better sound than most of Amazon’s Alexa range. If you would prefer a portable Alexa capable speaker to move around the home, then the Sony SRS-XB402M is your best bet at this price. There is no other competition.
