Dish TV Launches Android based Smart Products for India with Alexa Support

DTH operator Dish TV launched two smart connected devices in India. The first is Dish SMRT Hub, an Android-powered set-top-box. The second is the Dish SMRT Kit, which is Amazon Alexa powered dongle. With these devices, Dish TV is aiming to offer users with uninterrupted access to the TV content and video streaming. Here is all you need to know.

The Dish SMRT Hub will be available for Rs 3,999 for new subscribers. If you are an existing Dish TV subscriber, you will be getting it at Rs 1,500 discount. This means you will end up paying Rs 2,499.

Talking about Dish SMRT Kit, it will be available for Rs 1,199 and only existing subscribers will be able to buy it. It will work with the existing DishNXT HD Box. The Alexa enabled smart dongle brings the best of voice assistant and OTT apps. You will also be able to control your smart home devices with your voice.

The latest offering from Dish TV will eliminate the hassles of switching between linear TV and OTT apps while aiming to combine the two through a single entertainment device

Dish TV SMRT Hub features

Dish TV SMRT Hub, as mentioned, is an Android-powered set-top box that runs on Andriod Pie and includes support for Google Play Store as well as Google Assistant. It will support all major entertainment apps such as Amazon Prime Video, Zee5, Voot, ALTBalaji, and YouTube, however, Netflix support is missing. With built-in Chromecast support, the Dish TV SMRT Hub users will also be able to stream content on their connected TV from their smartphone.

Google Assistant inclusion means the SMRT Hub users can also control their smart home devices from the set-top box. Additionally, Dish TV has added support for Dolby Atmos. The company also bundles a Bluetooth remote with SMRT Hub that includes special keys for Google Assistant, YouTube, and Watcho.

Dish TV SMRT Kit features

Dish TV SMRT Kit with Alexa is a smart dongle that can connect your DishNXT HD set-top box and bring support for online entertainment apps as well as Alexa voice assistant. It comes with a bundled remote with a mic for voice commands as well as user interface navigation. Alexa integration means you can control your smart home devices with the SMRT Kit as well as make use of thousands of available Alexa skills.

Moreover, just this week, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued the Telecommunication (Broadcasting and Cable) Services Standards of Quality of Service and Consumer Protection (Addressable Systems) (Second Amendment) Regulations, 2019 (6 of 2019). TRAI’s prevailing regulations/orders for the television and broadcasting sector gave freedom to consumers to select television channels they want to watch.

According to TRAI’s latest notification, the request to add or drop a TV channel will have to be met within 72 hours. Information on the process of dropping or adding a channel will soon be available on Channel No. 999 on your television, be it a DTH service or neighbourhood cable TV.
