Qualcomm has just announced its latest chipset. The Snapdragon 855 is the next version of Snapdragon 845 which is the most powerful chipset around. However, Snapdragon 855 will be even better as it will go through a 7nm manufacturing process and more importantly will come with a 5G modem in it. This chipset will be able to anyway support 4G LTE for the regions where 5G is still a distant dream.
Snapdragon 855 will also have a 4th generation AI Engine, which is a huge boost in itself. This will make the 855 chipset three times Artificially Intelligent than its predecessor. Not only this, but the Snapdragon also announced that it will have a special service by the name of ‘Snapdragon Elite Gaming’ which is a delightful news for all the hardcore gamers. This chipset is mainly competing with Huawei’s Kirin 980, Apple A12 Bionic and Samsung’s Exynos.
Apart from the technical things the summit in Hawaii revealed the 5G revolution which has already begun. Snapdragon 855 is the first chip that will support 5G although it is waiting for the phones which will be able to accommodate the chipset. Samsung is poised to be the first smartphone company to bring a 5G device to the market. The next company which was named was Motorola which might have a device up their sleeve.
OnePlus, Google, Asus, HTC, Vivo, Sony, and Xiaomi are the other companies which will launch their 5G devices in the year 2019. The main name that is missing from this list is the leader Apple. Apple is reported to not rush into the market with their 5G phones as it is waiting for the right opportunity. It will look to demonstrate the use first and then enter this market. However, it is the first time that Apple will give away the advantage to its rivals.
That said, 5G networks are going up simultaneously in all the parts of the world. Regions such as North America, East Asia, Oceania, and Europe will be the where the 5G revolution will take place at first. Verizon and AT&T are ready with their infrastructure. Most of the flagship phones are rumored to work on Verizon’s 5G network while Motorola’s Moto Z3 will run on AT&T’s network in the USA.
However, there is a country, India, the second largest smartphone market, absent from the list of regions mentioned above. India is not ready for the 5G revolution as the bidding for the same is going to start at the end of 2019. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has said that 5G will regularize in India by 2022.
The only company which can successfully and smoothly shift to 5G immediately is Reliance Jio. They have the infrastructure in place and can deploy the 5G network. Jio has over 200 million subscribers and is the prime member in India which can start the revolution earlier than expected. Airtel is the second company which seems interested while Vodafone and Idea are still finding the balance in the 4G market in India.
The Indian government is planning smart cities and technologically advanced healthcare. This will help push the 5G agenda as the industry will have to cope with its pace. That said, the 5G revolution might not hit India until the end of 2019 but the smartphones supporting it will. The companies are going to launch their 5G phones regardless of the network present in the country. This will allow the users to shift to 5G whenever it hits the shelves in India.
